SPEAK THE WORD ONLY

“And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof; but SPEAK THE WORD ONLY, and my servant shall be healed.

For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said . . . I have not sound SO GREAT FAITH, NO, NOT IN Israel. . . And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and AS THOU HAST BELIEVED, SO BE IT DONE UNOT THEE. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” (Matthew 8:13).

Few today have such great faith as that centurion!

If they have someone sick in their house, and Jesus should come and say to them, “I will come to your house and heal him,” they would say, “That is just exactly what I want you to do. This is a very special case, and that is what it will take!”

The centurion in this account had more faith than that. He said, “You don’t have t come to my house!”

It is amazing how many people insist that I must go to the hospitals, or to their homes, to pray for their sick loved ones. One man said, “I will furnish you an automobile! Here is a check for $1000.00, or I will pay all your expenses if you just come and pray for my wife! It won’t take over six hours!”

I replied, “I can’t go. If I had the time to go, I wouldn’t take your money! I don’t have time to go pray for your wife. But God has provided another way whereby your wife can be healed without my going to her!”

I wish that I had the time to go everywhere people want me to go. I don’t have time even to pray individually for all the people who come to my campaigns, to say nothing of going everywhere to pray for those who don’t have time to come to the meetings!

Although Jesus was willing to go to this man’s house, (for God’s Word records that He said, “I will go,” the centurion had so much faith that he said, “You don’t have to come to my house. All that you need to do to heal my servant is SPEAK THE WORD ONLY, and he is going to be healed instantly.”

The split second he said, “Speak the word only,” his servant was healed!

If all Jesus had to do in days gone by was to speak the word, and someone a long way off was healed instantly, ALL JESUS HAS TO DO TODAY IS SPEAK THE WORD! Do you believe that?

Would you believe me if I told you right now that you were going to hear the voice of God, and that God was going to speak the word to you and heal you?

Do you want to hear the voice of God? Do you want to hear Jesus say, “It is done?”

Jesus commended this centurion and said that He had not found such faith in all Israel. Alone among the thousands who clamored to Him for their healing, this man realized the meaning of Christ’s authority. By faith, he understood that, even as his authority as a centurion made it possible for him to give a command with full assurance that command would be obeyed, so Christ’s authority as the Son of God made it possible for Him to simply give a command, and sickness must flee!

Seeing such faith, Jesus knew that all was needed was to say, “Go thy way, thy servant is healed,” and having spoken, it should be so!

If I were to say to you, “Go your way, your sick loved one, your sick friend is healed,” would you turn around and go to that person, expecting to find him or her healed when you got there?

If you can believe, now, that Jesus has SPOKEN THE WORD, and that that is enough, you will be healed, or your loved one will be healed. The cancer will drop off. The tumor will vanish. Heart trouble, epilepsy, cataracts and goiters will go! You can be made completely whole!

Just say, “SPEAK THE WORD ONLY, LORD!”

“WILT THOU BE MADE WHOLE?”

A man lay beside the pool of Bethesda (John 5). He had lain there for thirty-eight long years, totally helpless. The story is recorded in the Bible that a certain season, an angel went down and troubled the waters, and the first one that was put into the water after the angel troubled it was made whole (God has always provided means for the healing of His people!)

Jesus one day went to this pool. There, the Bible declares, a multitude of people were waiting for the troubling of the water; the halt, the maimed, the crippled. Jesus saw this man lying there on his bed where he had lain for thirty-eight years. Jesus said to him, “Wilt thou be made whole?”

Jesus was ready to SPEAK THE WORD and make him whole! But do you remember what he said?

“I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me!”

Here was the man standing by his side who was able to make him whole with a word! And he failed to recognize God’s method of bringing him healing.

Thousands today don’t even recognize who Jesus is when He stands at their side, waiting to speak the word and set them free!

For thirty-eight years, the man had waited there beside the pool, trying to find a way to get in.

Some people; have their eyes on a preacher, on a prayer card, on an anointed handkerchief, a prayer line, or some specified color of card.

I am not rebuking you. I am not saying God isn’t using evangelists, or that it is wrong to use prayer cards. But it certainly is wrong for you to tie your faith so firmly into that prayer card that you cannot accept healing unless your card is called and you get into the healing line.

Don’t say, “Of course I wan to be made whole, but you see, my card is pink, and I am afraid they are going to call white cards this time!”

People come from great distances into our Miracle revival campaigns. We find them discouraged, saying, “I want so much to be healed. But I didn’t get here in time to get a prayer card. I’ll just have to wait until I get a prayer card. And then maybe my card won’t be called!” They are broken hearted, because they feel they just can’t be healed!

“Wilt thou be made whole?”

Some reply, “I have been prayed for so many times! Brother _______ or Sister _________ prayed for me, and still I only grow worse. I have been prayed for by every deliverance evangelist in the country! Mine is a hard case. There are so many things wrong with me. Just let me tell you …”

Jesus stands waiting to SPEAK THE WORD ONLY!

Believe Him! Rest on His word! “We which have believed do enter into rest.” (Hebrews 4:3).

Jesus was standing there by the pool, waiting and wanting to speak the word that would make that man whole.

Do you know what happened?

Jesus just spoke a few words. He said, “Rise, take up they bed and walk!”

Immediately, that man was made whole!

He picked up that bed upon which he had been lying for thirty-eight years, and began running with it.

Jesus didn’t even touch him. He didn’t pray a prayer. All He did was SPEAK THE WORD! The power of God went through that man and made him completely whole!

He didn’t have a prayer card! He didn’t go through a healing line. Nobody touched him. He wasn’t anointed with oil. No one placed him in the emergency section. No one dropped him into the pool!

Jesus just SPOKE HE WORD. And after thirty-eight long years of suffering, he was healed instantly!

You can be healed right now! All you have to do is invite Jesus to SPEAKTHE WORD!

Raise your hand right now and say, “Jesus, speak the word only!”

Believe that He does it.

Hear me! Jesus speaks the word, and YOU ARE MADE WHOLE!

So many people, like the man at the pool of Bethesda, begin to find excuses for not being healed, when all the time Jesus is standing by, desiring to speak the word that would heal them!

There came a nobleman to Jesus, whose son was sick with a raging fever. He besought Jesus that he would come down to his house and heal his son. Jesus merely said, “Go they way; they son liveth.” (See John 4:46-53).

And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way!

That man knew his son was dying with a raging fever. But he also knew that if Jesus spoke the word his son would be healed.

What happened?

When he believed the WORD THAT JESUS SPOKE, his son was healed. As the man was on the way home, one of his servants met him and said, “Thy son liveth!” He asked the servant when his son began to amend. When the servant told him, he knew that “it was the same hour” when Jesus had said unto him, “Thy son liveth!”

JESUS SPEAKS THE WORD TODAY!

Some, bound by doubt and skepticism, may say, “But Brother Allen, you don’t really believe that Jesus is going to speak such words in this day, do you?”

If I didn’t believe that Jesus still speaks the word in this day, I would be wasting my time, preaching a powerless gospel!

But I am not wasting my time. Jesus does still speak the word today. You can find evidence in every issue of Miracle Magazine - the pictures and testimonies of many who have received remarkable healing! To say nothing of the thousands who give their testimonies under our great tent, and whose testimonies we never have space to publish!

Just as He spoke the word for the centurion’s servant, just as He spoke the word to the man who had lain beside the pool for thirty-eight years, just as He spoke the word for the nobleman’s son and made him whole, Jesus will speak the word right now that will make you whole.

Can you believe it?

GOD SPSEAKS THROUGH PEOPLE

“And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he (the Lord) spake by Elijah.” (I Kings 17:16).

That little widow could have said, “Ah, that is just that old bald-headed preacher!” But she didn’t.

She realized that it was God speaking through a choice servant of His, that it was not just Elijah speaking, but God speaking to her through him. She had prayed to God to help her and her son in their distress.

God spoke to her through Elijah, to bring her deliverance. He said to her, “Make me a little cake first, then go back and make for thee and thy son.” It wasn’t Elijah speaking. That was God speaking through him.

She believed and obeyed, and God met her need!

God still speaks through men and women that will yield to his moving.

God has many ways of speaking to us. He can speak audibly. I know He can, because I have heard Him speak in such a way.

Then, God speaks in a still small voice. (I Kings 19:12). We hear it with something inside us, something like a radio receiving set on the inside receives the message directly from God.

We can read the Word of God, and that is God talking to us.

We read that He spoke audibly to some, and His voice sounded like thunder. All the way through the Bible, God has called to His people, and spoken to them with an audible voice.

“He called unto Moses and said unto him…” (Lev. 1:1, Ex. 3:4, 5 and 19:3).

“He spake unto Joshua, saying…” (Joshua1:1).

“The Lord called Aaron and Miriam…” (Numbers 12:5).

But in I Kings 17:15, God spoke through a man. “According to the Word of the Lord, which He spake by Elijah. . .”

It was Elijah’s lips, it was his voice, but it was God speaking through his voice, and “Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are . . .” (James 5:17).

God still speaks through His ministers today. If you have lost confidence in the ministry, you will not have confidence in God either! That is exactly why some of you are not able to get anything from God! If you believe me, every one of you can hear the voice of God, now. And God will do mighty things for you!

Ten men met Jesus. Every one of them was a leper. Jesus was the only one who could help them. But they dared not even come close enough for Him to touch them. He didn’t even pray one prayer for them. He didn’t say, “Come, and I will lay my hands on you.” He said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” (See Luke 17:11-19). As they went they were cleanse!

A little Syrophenician mother came to Jesus. Her daughter was grievously vexed with a devil. No doubt, she would have liked to bring her daughter to Jesus, but she could not. Nevertheless, she believed that if she could get close enough to talk to Jesus about her daughter, she would be delivered. Jesus didn’t say, “Have someone get an ambulance and bring her to me,” nor ‘”I’ll go there and heal her.” Jesus commended her for her faith, saying, “Be it unto thee as thou wilt!”

I can see that daughter running down the walk to meet her mother as she returns home, sound, free, delivered! What made her whole? The words that Jesus spoke!

God is still the same today. He is not dumb. He still speaks the words of health and healing!

I’ll tell you what makes Jesus speak the word of healing today. I pray; you pray; we agree, without doubting, and God in heaven forms the third angle of the triangle! When two of us agree as touching anything, Jesus speaks the word and says, “It is done!”

Jesus says, in the Bible, “Whatsoever ye bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18). But it takes two of us in harmony and accord with real living, true faith, without a doubt to move God so He will say, “It is done!”

In a meeting in California about a year ago, I was preaching along this line.

There was one little woman out there who had an arm six inches shorter than the other. She looked up to heaven and said, “Jesus, speak the word only, and this short arm of mine will grow and both my arms will be the same length!” She believed as she prayed! Suddenly, the Spirit impressed her to bend over to touch the ground. As she obeyed God, that short arm was lengthened. She knew that Jesus had SPOKEN THE WORD!

This woman came running to give her testimony. She had no sooner finished when another woman ran to the platform. In her hand was an open safety pin, rusty, and sharp as a needle. She said, “While you were preaching, God gave me faith to believe for a miracle. More than a week ago, I swallowed this safety pin. I have been in pain all week. While you were preaching, I could feel it there in my stomach. I began to say to Jesus, “Speak the word only.” I felt it move up into my throat. I kept praying. It moved up and up. At last it was in my mouth!”

Her prayer to God had been, “SPEAK THE WORD ONLY!” God heard, and spoke!

He will speak the word today, for YOU!

He spoke the word for the centurion’s servant!

He spoke the word for the man at the pool of Bethesda!

He spoke the word for the Nobleman’s son, and for the Syrophenician woman’s daughter!

He spoke the word for the starving widow.

He spoke the word for the ten lepers.

He is speaking the word for men and women just like you today, every day!

WHAT IS YOUR NEED?

All you have to do is say to Him, “SPEAK THE WORD ONLY!” His word, spoken in heaven, will loose your son or daughter, your husband or wife, your precious old white-haired mother, though they may be a thousand miles away from you.

Do you believe it?

In His word there is life and healing. “Surely He hath born our griefs, and carried our sorrows . . .” (Isaiah 53:4).

“Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” (Matthew 8:17).

“He was wounded for our transgressions . . . And with His stripes we are healed!” (Isaiah 53:5).

That is God’s Word!

If Jesus says you are healed, who are the skeptics, modernists, infidels, and atheists, to say you are not healed?

If Jesus says you are healed, you make Him out a Liar when you say you are not!

I believe what Jesus said!

Raise your hand toward heaven now, and tell Him you believe IT IS DONE!

Health, healing, deliverance, or a miracle can be yours, right now!

How to Receive Healing – Oral Roberts

1. Know that God’s Will is to Heal You

Practically everyone recognizes the fact of God’s healing power. Mental acceptance is not enough. We must have personal, active faith in God for our own healing.

It is my sincere belief that Christ’s death on the cross includes all people everywhere and in all generations. The apostle Peter writes of Jesus, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness, by whose “stripes ye were healed.” (I Peter 2:24).

The prophet Isaiah had known that Christ would be the Savior and healer over seven hundred years before the crucifixion. Said he, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Both Isaiah and Peter declare that there is healing in His stripes. Someone recently pointed out to me that in Pilate’s Hall of Judgment the Roman scourger of Jesus inflicted thirty-eight stripes on His back. Also, the medical world says there are thirty-eight major diseases. If this is true, then for every disease there is a healing stripe on the flesh of Jesus’ back.

We must have personal, active faith in God for our own healing.

The apostle Matthew tells the story of Jesus as the Great Physician and at the end of the day’s labor of deliverance he says that Jesus’ healing power is a fulfillment of scripture. Matthew writes, “… they brought unto Him many that were possessed with devils; and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esias the prophet saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses” (Matthew 8:16, 17 is referring to Isaiah 53:4).

2. Remember that Healing Begins Within

You reach God and He reaches you through your soul. When God breathed the breath of life into man he became a living soul. Jesus declares that: “God is a spirit; and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:14).

Why is a man dominated by fear? Because he is not using his faith. Why is he not using his faith? Because he is out of tune and harmony with his God. There is only one thing that can separate a man from God, “… your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2).

Man’s most severe struggle is within himself for be is condemned by his own sins. As long as this is true, faith will not work. “If our heart condemn us not, then we have confidence (faith) toward God” (I John 8:21).

I imagine this question presents itself, “Does a Person have faith whether he is right with God or not?” The answer is, “Yes, he does.” Everybody has faith for God gives a measure of faith to every man. The difference is that faith will not work as long as there is sin in the person’s life.

Sin is a dominating thing and it produces a division in the soul. Faith lies dormant and inactive (James 2:17). Without the power of active faith the soul is no match for the grueling grind of life. The body and mind, keenly responsible to the soul, feel the impact of the soul’s fears and weaknesses and are easy prey for mental and physical ills.

It adds up to this; You cannot serve the devil with your life without losing out in the battle of life.

“Ye must be born again,” says Jesus (John 3:3). The now birth is a transforming spiritual experience (2 Corinthians 5:17). Condemnation is lifted. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit” (Romans 8.1).

3. Use a Point of Contact for the Release of Your Faith.

God is the only healer. Doctors perform a good work but they only assist nature while God can actually bring deliverance. The authority of Satan’s oppression over human life is in God and in His children. But God is a spirit and sometimes we are confused because He is not directly before us in a human body. He does not come into your room as your family physician with medical potions and instruments, you cannot see Him with the human eye, nor can you take a trip to heaven and present your case as you would go to your doctor’s office. How then can we reach Him? By establishing a point of contact.

Faith is the meeting ground between your limited self and your limitless God. A point of contact is given as a means of steadying and helping you to release your faith. Establishing a point of contact is like stepping on the starter of your car – you expect something to happen. The Roman centurion said. “I am not worthy for you to come under my roof, but speak the word only and my servant shall be healed.” Speak the word! He went on to say, “For I (also) am a man under authority, having soldiers under me, and I say to this man, go, and he goes; and to another, come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this and he does it.” (Matthew 8:5- 13).

Remember that the woman with the issue of blood used a point of contact, which helped her set the time for healing. She said, “If I may touch but His clothes I shall be whole.”

Faith is the meeting ground between your limited self and your limitless God.

There was no healing in His clothes, but touching the clothes helped her release her faith and her faith made her whole. That is why God gives us a point of contact. The book of Acts tells how that handkerchiefs or aprons were sent from the body of the apostle Paul to the sick and demon-possessed and how that through these little faith-cloths deliverance was wrought.

These cloths became points of contact and when placed upon the body of the sick and afflicted, the captives turned their faith loose and were set free. I, too, have been impressed and directed of the Lord to carry on the ministry of healing through cloths so that we are sending out over 10,000 a month.

4. Turn your faith loose Now!

So many times I have seen the need of saying, “Believe now and you may have deliverance.” On the other hand, many captives, when asked when they expect to get healed, will reply, “Oh, when God gets ready, I am.” God has been ready all the time. It’s your move next. Others reply, “I’m expecting God to heal me anytime.” On the face of that statement is a certain amount of reasonable value, but I remind you that it in not scriptural. There is a definite time when faith works and unless you set a time, it in doubtful if you will ever be delivered. God says, “Today is the day of salvation” (deliverance).

When you expect healing at no certain time, you are putting it into the dim, vague and distant future. God wants to heal you now. The best time is when God is ready; He is ready now!

The woman with the issue of blood set a time: when she touched His garment. The centurion set a time for deliverance; when Jesus spoke the word. The ruler of the synagogue set a time: Come and Lay hands on my child. They expected deliverance at the moment the Lord did what they asked Him to do. God will respond and work in our behalf when we believe and set a time.

If faith has risen in your heart, turn it loose, don’t even finish reading this, Believe God now!

This is a glorious privilege and matchless opportunity. “This very hour” is what the Lord is saying. The longer you wait to believe, the weaker your faith will grow; the more quickly you believe, the stronger your faith will develop. Strike a blow for deliverance this very minute. If faith has risen in your heart, turn it loose, don’t even finish reading this, Believe God now! The time for deliverance is when you can believe. The secret of deliverance is in instant obedience.

5. Close the case for victory.

When Bible conditions have been met and you feel the power of healing surging through your body in answer to the faith prayer, then close the case: take up the old road you have been traveling and believe God every step of the way. Burn every bridge between you and the old affliction. Don’t talk about the affliction except when God especially impresses you to give your testimony, then dwell more on His mighty power of deliverance than on what the devil afflicted you with and how you suffered. Change your outlook and live on the sunny side of life.

6. Join yourself to companions of faith.

I know how important it is to have encouragement and an atmosphere of faith to live in after being healed.

A few days after I had been healed I was feeling extremely weak in my body. My mother, a devout woman of faith, sensed my discouragement and said, “Son, you were sick a long time and you were bedfast when God healed you. You will have to exercise and do some work to get your strength back.” She saved my healing.

I have often wondered what would have happened to me had not my mother and father provided an atmosphere of faith for me during those early stressful days of my healing.

I have asked myself this question: What if I had been a member of a church whose minister and people were unfriendly toward healing and to people who had been healed? What would I have done in a moment of weakness and despondency if these people failed to encourage me or if they ridiculed me? How can I who have been healed by a miracle receive help from a church that denies the possibility and reality of the miracle of healing wrought in me by faith in God? How would I feel if the minister ridiculed the people who had prayed the “prayer of faith” for my healing.”

There is only one answer to this problem: those receiving deliverance by faith in God should by all means, join themselves with the church that believes in Bible deliverance and that will provide for them an abundance of faith and hope.

THE SPIRIT FOLLOWS THE BLOOD.

Jesus said, "Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you." The cleansing took place before the Pentecostal baptism. Jesus said on that night before he was betrayed, "Now are ye clean, but not all." (He knew that Judas had the devil in him). The disciples had been sanctified before Pentecost, for the word of God is true. We know they had been justified a long time before, for he said, "Rejoice not that the devils are subject unto you but rejoice because your names are written in heaven." And we know they were sanctified when Jesus prayed for them, for Jesus prayers did not have to be answered in the future but were answered right there. He said, "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world." They were not only sanctified but had received the Holy Spirit in a certain measure, because He breathed on them in the upper room and said, "Receive ye the Holy Ghost." Some have put it off that they were not sanctified until Pentecost. But we know the Spirit only follows the blood. The heart must be clean before the Holy Ghost can endue with power from on high. It is not the work of the Holy Ghost to burn up inherited sin and carnality, he is not our Savior. It is the blood that cleanseth us from all sin. The disciples were cleansed and sanctified and were sitting and waiting when the Holy Ghost fell upon them.

We know also that Cornelius was clean, for when the Lord let down the sheet before Peter, he said, "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common," or unclean. The Holy Ghost fell on them as at the beginning and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

________

THE PROMISE STILL GOOD.

The hundred and twenty on the day of Pentecost were baptized with the Holy Ghost according to promise. The converts of Philip in the Samaritan revival were baptized with the Holy Ghost, when Peter and John came from Jerusalem and preached the doctrine to them. The household of Cornelius received the same endowment of power, showing that the promise was also extended to the Gentiles. Again to the Corinthian church is the record given of the fulfillment of the promise. That the Apostolic church had wonderful power, is evidenced by its remarkable growth, as well as by the record of the Word. We have the promise of the same power today. How about its fulfillment?

But did not Paul prophecy that these things should be done away? Let us see. I Cor., 13:8 charity never faileth: Whether there be prophecies they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. Sometimes, not stopping to find out when this shall be, we jump at the conclusion that these things have been done away. We have only to read the next two verses to be set clear. "For we know in part, and we prophecy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away." Paul knew only in part, and prophesied in part, and spoke in tongues only in part; but when that which is perfect is come, then the knowledge, prophecy, and tongues of Paul shall be done away. If they are to be done away on that great and notable day of the Lord, they must be in existence when He shall come. Divine love never faileth. But when He comes these other things shall fail. God's promises must last till by God's own word they are withdrawn.

At the beginning of the Eighteenth century, among the French Protestants, there were wonderful manifestations of the Spirit power accompanied by the Gift of Tongues. The early Quakers received the same powerful religious stimulus and had the Gift of Tongues. The Irvingite church, about 1830, had the baptism with the Holy Ghost, and spoke in other tongues. In the Swedish revival in 1841-43 there were the same manifestations of the Spirit and also the Gift of Tongues. In the Irish revival of 1859 there is the record of the power of the Spirit in winning souls and the speaking in tongues by Spirit filled men and women. (For the above facts, my authority is Bishop Hurst's History of the Christian Church, Vol. 1). Bishop Taylor left the record that he took a young lady to labor among a certain tribe in Africa, and left her preaching through an interpreter; but returned two months later and found her preaching fluently in the native language, without having learned it.

________

A drunkard got under conviction in a street meeting, and raised his hand to be prayed for. They prayed for the devil of drink to be cast out, and the appetite was gone. He came to the meeting and was saved, sanctified, and baptized with the Holy Ghost, and in three days from the time he was drunk he was speaking in a new tongue and praising God for Pentecost. He hardly knows himself.

________

A sister was healed of consumption when she had but a part of a lung left. She lay in a trance for three days and saw heaven and hell and unutterable things. She received the Pentecost and gift of tongues and feels called to a foreign land.

________

The preaching of old time restitution is owned of the Lord. People have been paying up old debts, making wrongs right, getting hard feelings out of the way, etc. One who was saved from drink confessed to crimes and offered himself to pay the penalty of the law. People living in adultery or where one party had a living husband or wife have separated, and God is wonderfully pouring out His Spirit on this line of things.

________

TONGUES AS A SIGN.

Man is a fallen creature, and as such cannot receive the things of the kingdom of heaven, because they are spiritual and "foolishness unto him." He must be born again to understand God and His word. God recognizes this, and all through the ages has granted signs and wonders to awaken man from his spiritual death and turn him to seeking after God.

If you will turn to Mark 16:14, you will read as follows: "Afterward He appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen." You see that after these men had been personally with Jesus for something like three years, and had witnessed His mighty power in raising the dead and performing all manner of miracles, in a few hours after His crucification, had allowed Satan to harden their hearts and fill them with unbelief. They were also sanctified, as we read in John 17:17, Jesus prayed, "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth." This prayer was undoubtedly answered, as Jesus never prayed in vain. In John 15:3, we read, "Now are ye clean through the word which I have spoken unto you." In John 20:22, we read, "And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said unto them, receive ye the Holy Ghost." By comparing the gospel of Mark referred to above with this message from John just quoted, we believe both utterances of Jesus were made at the same meeting of the disciples and after He had upbraided them for their hardness of heart, He breathed on them the Holy Ghost to sustain them until Pentecost. They were anointed, as many sanctified souls are today while seeking a real, personal Pentecost.

Jesus at this time also said to them (Mark 16:16, 17), "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, and he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues." Here a belief and baptism are spoken of, and the sign or evidence given to prove that you possess that belief and baptism. This scripture plainly declares that these signs SHALL follow them that believe.

We also read in Paul's epistles to the Corinthians that he speaks of nine specific gifts in the Holy Ghost. We also find in searching the word that eight of these gifts were in the church before the Day of Pentecost, the gift of tongues on this day being the power that startled the multitude.

"Now, when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, (marginal reading, troubled in mind) because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marveled saying one to another, behold are not all these which speak Gallileans? And how hear we every man in his own tongue, wherein we were born? And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and said unto them, Ye men of Judea and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and harken to my words: for these are not drunken as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophecy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams."-Acts 2:6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.

In Luke 24:49, Jesus told His disciples to "Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high."

"And being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times of the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."-Acts 1:4-8.

They obeyed this command, and Acts 2:4 states, "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." We see here that they ALL spoke in other tongues.

If you will now turn to Acts 10 and read the story of Peter and Cornelius, you will see that the speaking in tongues was the sign or evidence to Peter that the Gentiles had received the Holy Ghost. Peter preached the Word, and they were cleansed through the Word, as the disciples before the Day of Pentecost. This was a hard dose for Peter to take, he being a Jew and having been taught that the Gentiles were dogs and unclean. God had previously given Peter a vision of a great sheet let down from heaven, filled with all manner of unclean animals, with the command, "Rise, Peter, slay and eat." The preaching of Jesus to the Gentiles was part of the eating, but Peter obeyed, and Pentecostal signs followed (Acts 10:46): "For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God."

If you will now turn to Acts 19:1-6, you will find that about twenty-nine years after Pentecost, Paul found some disciples at Ephesus that had not received their Pentecost. He preached the Word and explained to them their great privileges in the gospel, "And when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them: and they spoke with tongues and prophecised."-Acts 19:6.

How foolish so many of us have been in the clear light of God's Word. We have been running off with blessings and anointings with God's power, instead of tarrying until Bible evidence of Pentecost came.

EXPERIENCE IN TRUSTING GOD FOR NEEDS.

The first time I was out of wood after the Lord had shown me to trust Him, I asked the Lord for wood and the wood did not come. The Lord had shown me that I could not ask for flour till it was gone. I went down into the basement that morning and found some hard knots that had been laid aside and had enough wood for that day. The next morning I asked the Lord for wood. The wood did not come. I picked up enough chunks and chips to do that day.

The next morning, I went to the Lord and said, "Father, there are no more chunks and chips, we are out of wood. Send the wood." I went down to the city and forgot all about it. Did not think of it, until I returned home, and my daughter said, "Papa, who brought the wood?" I told her that "she need not trouble, the Lord would send it." But she said, "some man brought wood, who was he that you sent it by?" I thought she was joking, but she said, "Look in the box and in the basement." I went down and found a large load of wood already for the stove and just the length that we used in our stove.

I did not know for some time who brought the wood; but one day when holding meetings in South Seattle, a man invited me home with him, and while at dinner he said, "I want to tell you something that happened to me. I was crossing the bridge with a load of wood. My wife had written out a bill of some things that we had to have, and I needed feed for my horses. I was taking this load of wood in to get the groceries and feed. While out on the bridge and no one near me, an audible voice said behind me and just above me, 'Take this wood to McConnell.' I looked around me and there was no one near me. I said, 'I cannot take this wood to McConnell, I have got to have the groceries and feed,' and drove on. The voice said again, 'Take this wood to T.W. McConnell.' I said, 'How can I take this wood to McConnell; I must have these groceries and feed for my horses.' And the third time the voice spoke, and so strong that it scared me, and I answered, 'Well, I will,' for I believed it was the Lord talking. There was no one about.

"I went and made inquiry, finally looked in the directory and found where you lived. I drove to the house and unloaded the wood, then drove back home as quickly as I could, loaded up some wood that I had and drove back to town, sold my wood as soon as I reached town, got my feed and groceries, and from that time I have prospered as never before."
